We don’t do sponsored placements, and we don’t accept kickbacks for positive write-ups. If a brand sends us gear to test, they do so knowing that free product does not buy a good review. We don’t care about brand or corporate reputation. If gear survives our fence lines, our truck beds, RV adventures, and our pack, we’ll tell you. If it snaps, breaks, or fails under real and practical conditions, we’ll show you exactly where the failure point is. Like you, we want to get what we pay for.
Money doesn’t grow on trees, and we don’t know about you, but we work pretty damn hard for our money, especially in today’s economy. So shouldn’t the gear you spent hard earned money on last? We think so.

The Gear Lab Evaluation Blueprint
Every tool or piece of equipment we test gets run through the exact same three stage filter:
- The Commercial Promise: What the marketing brochure claimed the gear would do, what it looks like out of the box, and what we actually paid for it.
- The Homestead and Adventure Abuse: How we put it to work in the yard, on the fence lines, during our RV trips, or managing the drive of the pack. This is where we find out if it actually checks the boxes under real world pressure.
- The Brutal Verdict: Is it worth your money, or is it overpriced junk? We’ll tell you exactly what could be improved, what went right, and if you should buy it.
Active Rotation (Current Field Testing Logs)
Our field testing depends entirely on what we actually need to buy and use for our pack, our truck, and our homestead. Testing is constant, slow, and honest. Here is what is currently sitting in the yard, the truck, or getting packed for our upcoming road trip to Maine:
Rock Creek Collapsible Crates (XXL)
- Design Intent: Heavy working dog travel logistics.
- Testing Timeline: Purchased mid May 2026.
- Current Status: Baseline Phase. They haven’t been put through the real grinder yet, but we are about to see how they handle heavy working dog logistics during our upcoming trip to Maine and transit to active training sessions.
Dogtra Pathfinder 2 System (with Compass Transmitter)
- Design Intent: Off-leash perimeter tracking and recall in dense timber.
- Testing Timeline: Purchased mid May 2026.
- Current Status: Calibration Phase. It is unboxed, and we’ve been using it for training sessions and around the homestead, but we haven’t given it a real tracking workout yet. Unedited field data is coming. The definitive evaluation will occur during our wilderness hikes and swimming in Maine.
Mud River’s Magnum Hoss Food Storage Bag
- Design Intent: Moisture proof, claw resistant long haul kibble containment.
- Testing Timeline: Purchased mid April 2026.
- Current Status: Standby Phase. Supposedly moisture proof and indestructible for long haul trips. We are loading it up for the Maine run to see if it actually keeps the pack’s food dry or turns it into a soggy mess.
Truck and RV Field Upgrades
- Design Intent: Structural rig stabilization for high passenger weight.
- Testing Timeline: Ongoing installation.
- Current Status: Mechanical Stress Testing. We have a handful of practical road and rig setups being bolted down to see if they hold up to highway miles and rough camp spots.
Evaluations drop only after the gear either survives a real season of use or completely fails under practical conditions. No rushed weekend reviews just to get a click.
